Arcadian Networks' ARRA Grant Share Could Reach $150 Million

August 10, 2009

Company that supplies wireless backbone to nation’s only statewide smart grid communications network poised to lead distribution side projects for electric utilities

NEW YORK – August 10, 2009 – Arcadian Networks, in partnership with a combination of investor owned and cooperative utilities in five states, has been included in multiple Department of Energy Smart Grid Investment Grant (SGIG) applications with a total value of $150 million dollars. If approved, the grants would strengthen the role of private spectrum wireless networks in the nation’s smart grid communications infrastructure.

Private licensed communications are generally considered more secure and reliable for mission critical utility data than public spectrum methods. In Minnesota, the Arcadian private spectrum IP standards-based solution has proved effective as part of the nation’s largest distribution side smart grid network. More than a dozen utilities delivering electricity across the state have built a reliable model that is poised to grow, particularly among states moving to integrate renewables into the power grid.

The Arcadian Networks projects fit within the larger ARRA goals to “Create a framework for clean, efficient, American energy and transform our economy with science and technology,” among others.

“Our selection by these utilities in five states to be part of these applications underscores the importance of private broadband networks from a reliability and security perspective, and the strength and viability of our solution to an industry that is rapidly transitioning to full network visibility,” said Arcadian Networks CEO Ed Solar.

In the SGIG application, the Arcadian Network would be utilized to build smart grid communications on the backbone of a 700 MHz wireless IP network. Its uses may include:

  • Enhancing Demand Response through real-time, high speed data delivery
  • Enabling Advance Metering Infrastructure (AMI) across the entire grid
  • Propelling integration of distributed renewables
  • Closing communication gaps at rural substations to enhance grid reliability
  • Providing plug-and-play, standards-based interoperable networking for current and future technology
  • Safeguarding mission critical communications with private spectrum.
